Evening Prayer
It's Evening, Jesus
Did I do you proud?
What words leaked out of my heart today
and climbed the tower of my throat
and gurgled and hurled themselves in insults
toward others?
What thoughts gestated and infested my soul
with the cankerous worms of death?
What envies and greeds invaded me
or spawned new jealousies?
Show me my morning, before the sun burned off the fog...
Did I begin my day with you, Lord Jesus
and bring each thought captive?
Show me my afternoon in the rear view mirror of my reflection.
Did I bear witness to truth, to justice, to good?
Show me, too,
the goodness you imparted
the compassionate moment
the sympathetic insight
the patient hour of long suffering.
Le me see myself, Lord Jesus,
As I lay down.
Now I lay me down.
Amen
